Ruth Ascher Piano Masterclass

Ruth Ascher was a much-loved, gifted musician and teacher and a member of Reading U3A, which has sponsored the masterclass in her memory from a legacy left by her to Reading U3A. Berkshire Maestros and U3A work in partnership to run and promote this annual Masterclass.

The 2019 Masterclass will be given by Anthony Williams M.Mus GRSM(Hons) DipRAM LRAM who is Head of Keyboard and Instrumental Music at Radley College in Oxfordshire.

The Masterclass 2019

The Masterclass will take place on Sunday 31 March 2019 at 2:30pm. It will be held at St Joseph's College, Upper Redlands Road, Reading, RG1 5JT.

Following the Masterclass, Anthony Williams will be giving a short recital.

Entering the Masterclass

Entries to the Masterclass are welcome from pianists of grade 7+ and who are 18 years of age or under. Applicants must be available to attend the Masterclass on 31 March.

They are asked to propose two short pieces to play, from which one will be chosen by the organising committee if the application is successful.

Candidates will be selected to perform in the masterclass on the basis of:

  1. their musical ability (normally having attained grade 7 or 8),
  2. their readiness to cope with a public performance,
  3. the likelihood of them pursuing a career in music.

Other factors, such as the quality of the piece chosen. etc. may also be taken into account.

All applications should be accompanied by a sealed envelope containing a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s piano teacher, which addresses the above criteria, and provides any other relevant information. This letter will be treated as a confidential communication between the teacher and the organizing committee.

Entries must be received by Friday 1 February 2019.
