Berkshire Maestros' student achieves national success!

26 September 2018

Berkshire Maestros is delighted to congratulate student Oscar Abbott, 15, who has just been accepted into the newly-launched National Open Youth Orchestra – a great achievement of which he should be very proud.

Oscar is on the autistic spectrum but will not allow that fact to hold him back, especially when it comes to his love of music.

He started playing music at the age of seven, under the tutelage of Berkshire Maestros teacher Luke Wyeth. With the support of his school - Brookfields School in Tilehurst, his friends at Berkshire Maestros and his mother Jayne, Oscar has become an accomplished percussionist who plays regularly with Newbury Music Centre’s Donnington Band and Percussion Ensemble.

Oscar is very capable young man who makes a good impression on all those around him. He enjoys both playing and listening to all types of music and finds that playing familiar music helps to keep him calm and relaxed when there is a lot going on around him. Like many young people he finds that familiar music can help him to manage situations that he finds difficult or uncomfortable.

His selection for the National Open Youth Orchestra means that Oscar will work with other young musicians from across the UK and will perform at many prestigious venues throughout country.
Oscar's delight was obvious when he said;
“I’m excited to play with NOYO, and also like going to London and other places for rehearsals and concerts.”

NOYO’s Doug Bott welcomed Oscar to the orchestra saying;
“We are thrilled to have Oscar as part of the orchestra. The audition panel were hugely impressed by his audition!”

Launching in September 2018, the National Open Youth Orchestra (NOYO) will be the world’s first disabled-led national youth orchestra.

NOYO will provide an inclusive progression route, to support the development of the UK’s most talented young disabled people. It will also be open to non-disabled young people, providing an innovative and ambitious musical context for everyone. NOYO musicians will be empowered to radically redefine the idea of ‘The Orchestra’ – inspiring new musical instruments and creating new musical forms for the 21st century.

The staff and students at Berkshire Maestros wish Oscar and the orchestra every success for the 2018-19 season!
