Widening Opportunities – from concept to application. Every child can grow through music; every child should have the chance has been a long standing belief of Berkshire Maestros and those who teach within the organisation. This principle has been reflected in many ways, not least of all via the development of an approach which took the idea of teaching children instrumental skills in small groups, to a concept whereby whole classes or year groups could be taught together. Learning alongside each other and enjoying building basic musical and instrumental skills and confidence through a wide range of activities, each project focussed on a specific instrument or instrumental group. These early projects were called Foundation Courses and were amongst the earliest examples of what have now nationally been called Widening Opportunities. Innovation is something of which Berkshire Maestros is very proud, and to say that we were ahead of the field is no exaggeration. However, we also recognise that in a changing world it is crucial to keep developing and moving forward; sitting back and feeling pleased with ourselves is not an option. Since these early days, the courses have been re-named and re-modelled, and are now known as Sing and Play. Basic resource packs for the schools involved have been produced and a much wider range of instruments introduced. The numbers of teachers involved has more than doubled, as has the number of children having access to a project. Currently the range of projects in schools includes: Strings (upper and lower and some mixed), Brass (cornet, mixed brass, brass and percussion), Recorder, Fife, Flute, Guitar, Singing and mixed band Berkshire Maestros will continue to expand the number of projects offered, as well as continually assess their effectiveness in fulfilling the government agenda, but most importantly we will continue to fulfil our own mission, that of…teaching music, changing lives! |

In order to support schools above and beyond providing them with access to a wide range of instrumental teachers, we have devised a number of workshops which aim to increase the basic musical understanding of both teachers and pupils in the music classroom. Whilst these workshops are not limitless – our teacher resource is as precious and limited as your own! – we believe that we have concentrated on two key areas of importance: using percussion and the voice. |
