A specialist programme of Early Years music training delivered across two separate days for professionals and students who work in, or intend to work in, Early Years or Primary School settings.

This unique programme will show you that music has the power to impact on all aspects of EYFS goals:

  • Music can help give children the confidence to carry on learning and build self-esteem
  • Music-making has been shown to help develop maths and literacy skills
  • Involvement in music-making also helps develop a range of motor skills
  • Musical activities also help children learn about spatial awareness, teamwork and sharing
  • Registration is at 8.45am for a 9am start.

The course will explore how to use songs to develop children’s feeling for pulse, rhythm and pitch. You will learn how songs simultaneously develop children’s language and literacy skills and how you can use music-making to help boost children’s confidence, listening, memory and retention.

We will look at recent research, resources and ideas and give you a chance to improve your own skills in practical music-making. We will also explore the close link between music and movement and how this can positively impact children's development.

There will be opportunities for you to share your own experiences, if you wish, and time to meet other like-minded educators to discuss experiences, aims and outcomes.

Some of the areas covered include:

  • Singing - we will cover voice issues, repertoire, voice development in the young child and exploring Kodaly’s approach to music education. We will encourage the use of your own voice at all levels giving you resources of appropriate songs and voice warm up games.
  • Instruments - A focus on the use of instruments (e.g. Percussion, Drums, Xylophones) and their effective use within Early Years teaching. This session will also explore outdoor music making.
  • Music Through Movement - we feel music in our bodies as we move; even babies bounce, tap and dance to it. This session explores the close link between music and movement and the benefits of letting children explore music through movement.
  • Music as communication and Music Therapy - communication through music will be the main topic of this session. We will be looking at music-making and social skills - all together, taking turns/waiting, partner and team work. We will also explore improvisation.
  • Music to enhance stories, themes, festivals and celebrations - language development is a key area of development for young children and music can enhance it. This session will explore this further by looking at music during story time and music linked with a theme, as well as music for festivals and celebrations.
